SEDCOR President Chad Freeman, Salem Urban Development Director Kristin Retherford and League of Oregon Cities Intergovernmental Relations Associate Wendy Johnson met with government officials from Ukraine on March 15.

The Ukraine officials, which consisted of members of parliament, regional councils, a vice mayor, a mayor, a university professor and journalist, are visiting Oregon and Seattle to learn how government and businesses partner in economic development.

Hosted by the World Affairs Council of Oregon, the group was part of the USAID’s Participant Training, a program to familiarize the Ukraine participants with the U.S. experience in sustaining and incentivizing regional development.

Anna Schneider, the program assistant for the International Visitor Program of the World Affairs Council of Oregon, said the Ukraine delegation has met with public, private, nonprofit and government agencies working on economic development.

“Many in the delegation represent regions in Ukraine that are rural areas,” Schneider said adding people in Oregon have “the resources to connect them with economic development efforts in rural areas and how we deal with issues like the timber industry and moving forward into more knowledge-based industries.”

Freeman said SEDCOR’s role is to build partnerships with businesses and government agencies to help businesses solve challenges and grow.

“Building partnership is the key to economic development,” Freeman said.
